Installation Instructions

In general, you can open the file and start working with BrushTools immediately, but that is not recommended. Please follow the instructions below in order to install and load BrushTools appropriately. This needs to be done only once.

  1. Download and save the BrushTools zip file.

  2. Make sure that Excel is not running (close all Excel windows).

  3. Unzip BrushTools add-in file into the default Excel add-ins folder (this is the recommended path, but you can choose another if you wish):

    C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns

    Where User_Name is the user’s Windows account name.

  4. Load Excel or open an Excel workbook/file.

    The next steps adjust the Excel macro security settings and load the BrushTools add-in. Follow the instructions according to the version of Excel. Again, this needs to be done only once.

  5. Make sure that the security settings enable add-ins functionality (since add-ins are enabled by default in Excel 2010 and Excel 2007, you may skip this step and only return to it later if necessary):

    1. Adjust the macro security settings according to the version of Excel.
      • Excel 2010: File tab -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Macro Settings -> choose "Disable all macros with notification" or a lower level.
      • Excel 2007: Microsoft Office Button -> Excel Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Macro Settings -> choose "Disable all macros with notification" or a lower level.

    2. Uncheck all of the boxes in the next window according to the version of Excel.
      • Excel 2010: File tab -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Add-ins
      • Excel 2007: Microsoft Office Button -> Excel Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Add-ins

    3. If you have changed any settings close all Excel windows then reload Excel or open an Excel workbook/file.

  6. Load BrushTools into Excel in the following way:

    1. Open the add-ins dialog box according to the version of Excel.
      • Excel 2010: File tab -> Options -> Add-Ins -> drop down: Excel add-ins -> Go
      • Excel 2007: Microsoft Office Button -> Excel Options -> Add-Ins -> drop down: Excel add-ins -> Go

    2. If you have saved the BrushTools add-in in the default add-ins folder cited above, it will be automatically listed in the available add-ins list in the add-ins dialog box, otherwise, if BrushTools does not appear in the available add-ins list, click Browse, and use the Browse dialog to locate the BrushTools add-in file and click OK.

    3. To load the BrushTools add-in into Excel check the box next to BrushTools add-in and click OK.

  7. If asked to do so, enable macros for the BrushTools add-in.

  8. Do not change the file name or title of the BrushTools add-in, otherwise it may not work appropriately.

  9. When you use BrushTools for the first time you will be asked to accept the license agreement.

You have now completed the installation of the BrushTools add-in. The BrushTools add-in will be loaded (with its toolbar) every time you run Excel. We hope you enjoy working with BrushTools.

In the future, if needed to unload the BrushTools add-in, follow section 6.C. (above) and uncheck the box next to BrushTools add-in and click OK.
